Food and Farming
Food and farming are central to the character, environment and well-being of Britain. British farmers and producers not only produce food to some of the highest standards in the world but they also play a vital role, in shaping and maintaining the very landscape and communities for which Britain is so famous. If, however, British farmers are to continue to make their valuable contribution to Britain’s rural communities, and the national as a whole, it is vital that the industry receives the recognition that it deserves, as this will enable it to unlock its potential for the benefit of all.
The Countryside Alliance Foundation's new food campaign is calling for mandatory country of origin food labels on all meat products. Click here to view some examples. Clear labelling on meat products is essential in ensuring that consumers are able to make informed choices and have confidence in the products they are buying. We believe that honest labelling will provide much needed support to British producers, who are subject to some of the tightest animal welfare and production standards in the world. Our views are in step with the public, as consultations and polling consistently show that consumers want to know where their food comes from. This campaign complements our existing projects, such as the Countryside Alliance Awards, which sees us celebrate communities, rural enterprise and local food.

Wednesday, 12 October 2011 On the morning of Tuesday 11th October, members of the animal rights group The League Against Cruel Sports dressed up as badgers to deliver a petition against the Government’s proposed badger cull to DEFRA.Reducing the debate to an argument over the rights of badgers (who, it should be remembered, also suffer greatly from contracting Bovine Tb) is to trivialise and ignore the plight of farmers up and down the country who have had to combat this disease for several decades, with little or no help from Government.
